Does Your Child Need Speech & Language Therapy?
Adequate speech and language abilities are necessary for children to learn, communicate, and participate with others in play. At Kidsource Therapy, we offer play-based speech and language therapy that focuses on speaking, language, and oral motor development.
If your child struggles with any of the following disorders, they might need speech or language therapy.
Speech Disorders
A speech disorder refers to a problem producing sounds. Speech concerns can include:
- Articulation Disorders: difficulties producing sounds in syllables or saying words correctly, to the point that listeners can't understand what's being said.
- Fluency Disorders: Non-fluid speech concerns such as stuttering, repetitions (ex. D-d-d-duck), or prolonging sounds and syllables (ex. bbbbbbus).
- Resonance or Voice Disorders: inappropriate variances with the pitch, volume, or quality of the voice that distract listeners from what's being said. These disorders may also cause pain or discomfort for a child when speaking.
- Dysphagia or Oral feeding disorders: difficulties with drooling, eating, and swallowing.
Language Disorders
A language disorder refers to difficulties understanding or putting words together to communicate ideas. Language disorders are either receptive or expressive:
- Receptive Disorders: difficulties understanding or processing language.
- Expressive Disorders: difficulties putting words together, limited vocabulary, or inability to use language in a socially appropriate way.
Sensory Feeding Disorder
Children who present as picky eaters or only accept limited varieties of foods or liquids may have sensory-based feeding difficulties. Sensory-based feeding problems occur when a child has a sensory aversion to certain types of food, usually based on the food’s texture, taste, smell, or look. Children with these aversions typically receive feeding therapy with a speech-language pathologist focusing on a sensory-based feeding hierarchy to introduce new textures and flavors, providing a greater opportunity for adequate nutrition and hydration.
